The "star-crossed lovers", Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez defies all odds by staying together no matter how much their world tries to break them apart. Troy is the coolest and hottest boy in school while Gabriella is a new smart student who fits in best with the science crowd. They're not exactly a good pair, logically: science doesn't fit with sports according to social norms. But their strong attraction for each other renders the status quo meaningless and their struggle to deal with multiple facets of their identities amidst a typecasting society easier.

The main antagonist, Sharpay (perhaps the only antagonist that everybody ended up loving) was a rich spoiled brat with a passion for the stage. She always got what she wanted-until the pair came along, that is. She wants the stage for herself and if she's going to share it with anybody, it's going to be with Troy and Troy alone. Throughout the first and second installment, she went to all lengths to destroy Troy and Gabriella's relationship and get Troy to stay by her side. Though no matter how scheming and conniving she could get, she would always come through in the end.

There are lots of characters to choose from in High School Musical. The boys can go as Troy in his game or warm-up jersey. The girls can choose to go as a Wildcat cheerleader, Sharpay, or Gabriella--whoever they fancy most.
